Using Body Language In Communication To Help Get Your Point Across

Another way to analyze body language in communication is to look at the person’s stance. If they are in an open stance, with arms at their sides, they are conveying that they are interested in what you have to say and are open to your suggestions and comments. A closed stance, however, shows that they are not interested (or even trust) what you have to say. A closed stance can include turning the body away from you or crossing the arms over the chest. If the person is sitting, leaning away from you is an indicator they are not interested. Leaning forward is a great indicator that the person wants to hear what you have to say.

One great way to convey interest in the person and what he or she has to say is a technique called mirroring. In mirroring, you adjust your body stance, arms, and facial expression to match (mirror) those of the person you are talking to. This is a very subtle nonverbal communication technique to use when you are meeting someone for the first time and want to make a good first impression. Also, in personal relationships, this shows that you are talking to a person you want to spend a lot of time with and get to know better.

Gestures are also a great way to use body language in communication. Sometimes, we feel that our words are simply inadequate to convey what we are trying to say. Using hand gestures can help illustrate your point.

Body language in communication is not a new concept. Humans have been using nonverbal communication since the beginning of the human race. We use body language to convey a host of emotions, including happiness, sadness, anger, fear and interest. Learn to read people and their body language to enhance your own communication skills and convey your message more effectively.
