Dealing With Depression Begins With You And Your Attitude

Work On Your Self Esteem

Self esteem is a vital cog in the human psychological machinery, playing a vital role in one’s ability to attain happiness and achieve success. There are two aspects of healthy self esteem – how much you feel accepted by other people, and your sense of self worth. Naturally, someone with higher self esteem would be better able to fend off depression, as well as to overcome depressed states.

What is it about life that makes you feel good? Is it your achievements at work? Your academic results? Your close-knit family ties? Your church community? Different things matter to different people, to varying degrees. It is a good idea, when it comes to your sources of happiness and self esteem, not to put all your eggs in one basket. If you are a 100% workaholic who derives life pleasure solely from climbing the corporate ladder, for example, you would probably feel very lousy about yourself at a time when your work achievements take a beating.

Replace Negative Thought Patterns With Positive Affirmations

Due to our upbringing and societal influences, we are often, mostly subconsciously, putting ourselves down. You’re not good enough, it’s impossible, I could never do that, I am not as pretty as her, I don’t deserve to get the job, looks like I am destined to be unhappy, are some possible mental models which we have adopted since young.

Things always go wrong with me, life is so unfair, here we go again, I am pathetic, my life sucks, are other examples of common negative perceptions about life.

If you find that you are affected by such psychological negative tendencies, it’s time to make a change. Learn to be your own number one cheerleader, and start taking part in positive self talk. Replace your negative mental limitations with positive recitations. I can do it, I like myself, I deserve good things, I am happy, are some possible ones which you could adopt. Do not underestimate this simple step – it works! Especially when it is carried out often enough, and with sufficient conviction.
