The Different Types Of Stress You Are Exposed To

When you think of stress, what kind of stress are you thinking about?

If you didn’t know that there are actually different types of stress, then here is some information that you will hopefully find useful.

Basically, when it comes to different types of stress, there are three general types: physical stress, mental (or psychological) stress, and emotional stress.

Ultimately, however, all three types of stress will fall into the same final category, which is physical stress. The reason for this is that our brain functions in a fight or flight mode whenever we are stressed, and it doesn’t differentiate between stressors that are being sent to it that have to do with bills that need to be paid or being chased by a hungry carnivorous animal. The brain still assumes that your life is in danger when you are stressed.

Now, let’s discuss the different types of stress.


Physical stress. When we work out, do work around the house, or use our bodies for strenuous activities, even if it’s playing sports with our friends, we are placing our body under stress.

This form of stress, however, doesn’t often have the same effects as mental or emotional stress. We are thinking through the work or the activity that we are participating in and as long as there isn’t a serious surprise or manifestation during that activity, our body won’t need to kick into that fight or flight mode.

Physical stress tends to fatigue our muscles and therefore we will need a fair amount of rest to help it recover.


Mental stress. Next up for the different types of stress is mental stress.

Relationships are hard work. They demand us to work with another person for a common goal. Usually when we think about relationships, that goal is for the two people to coexist amicably. This isn’t always going to be easy and there will be times when we can’t stand dealing with the other person. When this happens, we are enduring mental or psychological stress.

Each person has his or her own comfort zone. He or she knows what she likes and prefers and when we don’t get our way, it puts some stress on us. How much stress depends on the individual and his or her temperament.


Emotional stress. When we are stuck in traffic or dealing with a pressing deadline at work, then we are enduring emotional stress. This level of emotional stress is what often causes our brains to enter that fight or flight mode. We can either head into the work, or that traffic jam, and deal with it, or we can run away from it. As far as the different types of stress are concerned, this is the one that is most commonly thought of when we talk about stress.


When it comes to different types of stress, there are also positive kinds of stress and, the more common, which is the negative type of stress. How you manage your stress can determine your health and wellbeing in the long run.
