Dealing With Depression Begins With You And Your Attitude

Accept That Life Isn’t Smooth

Bad things happen to everyone. Life is never equal and not fair to all. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has their fair share of sorrows, trauma, grief, failings, rejection and banana skin moments. Everyone has their own inadequacies and insecurities, and all of us have our deepest, darkness moments.

They say life is not a bed of roses. Actually, the opposite is true – life is a bed of roses, one which always comes with its fair share of thorns. Nobody has a totally smooth ride through the journey of life.

How does this apply in the case of depression? Well, understanding and accepting this reality of life will help you to better cope with the struggles which you are personally going through. Everyone faces obstacles and impediments to success and happiness – it’s not whether or not you get hit by them, but how you react to them that is important.

Accept The Imperfections In Life

Are you a perfectionist? Are the clothes in the wardrobe drawer never neat enough, the kitchen table never clean enough, the windows and mirrors never shiny enough, your dinner recipes never tasty enough, and your job never fulfilling enough? Is a line you draw never straight enough, and are you never a good enough spouse or parent?

Being overly idealistic can be a chronic drain on one’s psychological wellbeing. Because you feel things are never good enough, you fail to appreciate the positive aspects of life, and spend much time and energy (both physical and mental) harping on areas which are not up to scratch. Learn to let go of perfectionism. By accepting the imperfections as part of the perfection of life, you may well find yourself a much happier person.

Learn To Take On A Brighter And More Optimistic Outlook

Some people tend to be more optimistic when viewing life situations and facing problems, while others may be more pessimistic, with some even having a doomsday feel about them. And, generally, depressed persons are likely to be more negative than usual.

Two different people, for example, can view the exact same situation in such a vastly different manner, it’s quite amazing, really. Learning to take on a more positive outlook on life can make world of difference in your happiness levels. Is your glass half empty, or half full?
