Possible Causes Of Workplace Stress – Factors Which Contribute

There are many causes of workplace stress – from having to deal with an annoying coworker to having several different supervisors or worrying about your job security.

In these difficult economic times, it can be very stressful for some people to deal with the day to day problems at work.

One of the main causes of workplace stress is a fear of being laid off from the job. This is a very real fear for some people because of their lack of job skills. This forces them to compete for recognition with other workers who are often much better qualified. They may volunteer for any overtime which is available because of cutbacks in staff that have been already implemented; of course, this causes even more workplace stress because they may not then have the time to eat properly or take part in exercise programs which would keep them healthy and help to avoid stress.

There could be increased pressure on them to perform more and more tasks without any increase in remuneration or enhanced job satisfaction. Workers are afraid to decline extra work because they are afraid that someone else will do the work and gain a little recognition by supervisors. They feel pressured to perform to the best of their abilities at all times.

Another cause of workplace stress can be having work taken from one worker and given to another; this results in a feeling of insecurity and isolation for the original worker. Whatever the reason may be, this can cause resentment and stress. The feeling of not being able to make one’s own decisions about one’s workload is an additional cause of workplace stress, as is working shifts that conflict with the body’s natural rhythm.
