Simple Tips For Organizing Clutter And Simplifying Your Life

Old paperwork and mail needs to be dealt with in the same way. Go through your files (assuming you use them) or piles of paperwork, old magazines, ancient receipts, etc. If you’d only saved a magazine because there’s a recipe or article you want to keep, cut it out and save it in the appropriate file – yes, you do need files and somewhere to store them – and toss the magazine into the recycling pile. Old credit card statements and checks need to go through the shredder. Anything containing personal information must be shredded if you want to prevent identity theft.

The best way to organize clutter is to deal with one pile at a time. Set yourself a goal to attack one pile per day.

You can work room by room or closet by closet – including storage closets – or by category. For example, tell yourself that you’re going to tackle the easiest job first, or the most challenging; it’s up to you, but you know you’re going to have to organize clutter eventually, so make a start.

You can diminish clutter by taking yourself off mailing lists – this is easy to do online. You should also organize clutter in your email inbox by unsubscribing to most of your department store emails, charity emails (only keep the ones you want) and all the sites you inadvertently signed up for. Sign up for online statements from banks and credit cards companies – this will get rid of your paper statements in the mail. If you recycle paper, open your mail while standing next to the recycle box and dump the unwanted mail straight into it, but make sure that offers from credit card companies are shredded.

If you have children or grandchildren, you will probably have dozens of pieces of their artwork that you can’t bear to throw away. We store our works of art under the bed in plastic boxes – that way, we can keep the ones we aren’t displaying and organize clutter at the same time.

Do you have a box (or boxes) of photos? Take the time to scan them onto your computer and download them onto disks. Save some on the computer for your screen saver if you must, then store the disks in a safe or fireproof box.

Once you have learned to organize clutter, your home will look and feel much more orderly. If you deal with items as they come into the house, you will have dispensed with the piles of paper and messy closets – everything will be in its place.

I haven’t mentioned clearing out the clutter in the garage. That is not my job. And I don’t care how messy it gets – that’s a job for the master of the house.
