Overcome Baby Separation Anxiety Using Simple Strategies

To minimize this feeling in your baby, you will have to decide how to handle his baby separation anxiety by either taking him with you and waiting for him to grow out of it, or by leaving him with familiar people, such as another parent, grandparents or relatives. If you have to leave him with a person outside of the family circle, then make sure he gets to know that person well ahead of the time when he’s going to be left alone with her, and be sure that he knows you’re at ease with her. If there is any tension between you and the caregiver, the baby will pick up on it.

Try to have frequent meetings a few weeks before you plan to return to work, for example – and leave him in her care for part of the day. Stay with him and, if possible, say, “Bye” and step out for a few minutes to see how he copes with his separation anxiety. If he’s happily playing with the caregiver and his toys or other children when you return, then perhaps he’s comfortable enough with the situation to be eventually left alone with her.

Do this whether your babysitter is going to come to your home or you are going to leave baby in a daycare center. When baby has to be apart from you, make sure he has his favorite toy or blanket with him as a substitute for you and a reminder of familiar places – this should calm his fears and help to combat his baby separation anxiety.

A toddler can also experience separation anxiety when away from Mom or Dad. You will need to talk to him and assure him that you will be away for a certain amount of time but will return as promised. When you return, he will realize that you do go away and come back. Again, if you think it will make him feel more secure, take along his favorite blanket or toy. And remind yourself that this will pass in time!
