What Makes A Good Friend – Elements Of Special Friendships

Are you wondering what makes a good friend?

Good friends are like diamonds – when you find them, you want to never let them go. They are priceless.

They are the people who know the real ‘you’, the ones who accept you, warts and all, the people you call when your life falls apart. They are the ones who will listen, dry your tears, and do their best to make it all better again.

What is it about some people that attracts you to them and allows them to become a good friend to you? It’s an indefinable feeling, similar to the feeling you have when you are attracted to someone romantically; you just know that you are going to ‘click’ and be good friends.

You often share the same interests and cultural history, which means you can relate to each other in an easy and relaxed manner. Of course, you need to have the same ethical standards – a scrupulously honest person would find it hard to become a good friend to someone with criminal tendencies! Sometimes, a good friendship will develop between people who have shared a difficult experience, such as both having been laid off from their jobs or having just gone through the break up of a relationship.

What also makes a good friend is the ability to be honest with one another; not always brutally honest, but honest enough so that you can rely on your friend to tell you the truth without destroying your happiness or self-image. A good friend will always consider your feelings.

What else makes a good friend? A good friend is someone you can trust. We all have friends whom we just know won’t be there for us when we need them, but that’s okay, as long as we have a good friend who will ‘have our back’ through good times and bad. Those other friends are great to go out and have fun with, but what makes a really good friend is the one who will often put your needs first. You may sometimes disagree with each other, but are able to recognize that it’s impossible for you both to agree on everything all the time.
