Time Management In Nursing – Useful Tips And Advice For Nurses

Time management in nursing should include leaving blocks of time wherever possible to allow you to catch up on patient paperwork, computer entries, or important tasks that must be done. This is sometimes unrealistic in a hospital environment but you should make the effort to do it; if you are a nurse in a doctor’s office, you should be able to manage your time in a much more productive manner because patients are usually scheduled to arrive at specific times.

In order not to negatively affect time management in nursing, you should be careful and aware of unnecessary interruptions. Some are unavoidable, such as patient demands or emergencies, but you may not have the time to spend chatting to co-workers during your shift or taking long coffee breaks. It helps if you set your watch and your desk clock ten minutes ahead – that way, you can look at the time and tell people that you need to be somewhere else right now. This also helps to give you some breathing space when you know you still have ten minutes to spare – you know the clock is set ahead but somehow it gives you a psychological boost to know you have extra time.

Of course, you know that your work situation can change at any moment due to patient needs and emergencies, so you must learn to delegate minor tasks to others or ask someone else to take care of a patient who needs a bedpan or assistance with going to the bathroom. You don’t have to do everything yourself – you just have to make sure that it’s been done. Time management in nursing is greatly helped if you can also learn to delegate work at home, as this will give you more free time to organize yourself at work.

You may still not get everything done, but at least you will know that the important things on your list have been completed. Time management in nursing will give you a better balance between home and work and allow you to spend more quality time with friends and family when you have time off.
