Time Management For Nurses – Tips For Better Organization And Efficiency

Are you seeking some tips and advice for time management for nurses?

Nurses normally have busy schedules and it is important that they have good time management skills both at work and at home.

Oftentimes, nurses have to work 10 or 12-hour days, so time management will be essential for optimal wellness. Without time management skills, nurses will most likely become stressed and perhaps even careless.

First, when it comes to time management for nurses, it is important for them to plan their workweek ahead of time, as this will lessen stress and cause productivity to increase. Regardless of what shift you work, plan your week using a calendar, marking your appointments and events. You can also add goals to the calendar and try to accomplish them as well.

Along with planning for things outside of work, plan your work schedule as well. Plans tend to help us to be more effective and productive. It is a good idea to write down your plan and list your priorities. For example, if you are beginning your shift and you have ten things to accomplish on your shift, make a list of those ten things and prioritize them. Make sure you complete each task and cross off the task after completion. This way, you will not forget anything.

As a nurse, I’m sure it can get very hectic, as patients need your time and sometimes your shift does not go as expected. When it comes to time management for nurses, having a list is important because then if something unexpected happens and you return back to your station, you will know exactly what you’ve done and what you have left to do.

It is also important to minimize distractions and interruptions while you are working. Don’t carry your cell phone with you and try not to engage in long discussions with co-workers, as this can take away from the time that you can be tending to patients and doing your paperwork. For better time management for nurses, be mindful of distractions and interruptions and do what you can to keep them at a minimum.

Staying organized is important as well. If you have your own office area or desk, try to keep it organized and tidy. You can even get yourself a personal organizer to help you become more organized. Keeping things in front of your eyes is very helpful at helping us manage our time more efficiently.

Some say that the first hour of your day will determine how productive the rest of your day is – this is something to keep in mind when trying to improve time management for nurses. Successful businessmen and women share that one of the keys to their successes is that they take the first part of their days to prioritize and organize their day. They make lists and prioritize them and do their best to accomplish everything for that day. Be sure that you spend some time in the morning or before your shift to organize for the day.

Time management for nurses is much like time management for anyone. The key points are to take the time to do what you need to do to get organized. If you take serious planning and organization, you will find that your days will run more smoothly and you will be more productive as well.
