Physical And Psychological Symptoms Of Stress – How Stress Shows Itself

Stress is a natural occurrence in everyone’s life, but not everyone shows the signs of stress the same way. Also, stress does not affect each person’s body in the same way when stress happens.

There are, however, a number of physical and psychological symptoms of stress that are fairly common. By understanding these symptoms, you can learn to control your body’s reaction to the stressors that accompany everyday life. Stress does not have to control you.

Also, it is important to understand that stress can also be a good thing – it is nature‘s way of warning you that a situation may be dangerous or unhealthy.

First, what are the physical symptoms of stress? Stress causes your heart rate to increase to deal with the event. This is in part caused by the diversion of blood from non-essential areas of the body (such as the extremities) to the more essential organs. Cold, clammy skin is one indicator that you may be stressed. Stress can cause a spike in your blood pressure, too.

When stress reaches the levels of causing anxiety, you may also experience difficulty breathing. In addition, stress causes your cholesterol levels to rise because more fats are being released into your blood stream.

Stress causes digestive symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome (alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea). Stress affects your appetite, too (you either eat too much or you don’t eat at all). Long term exposure to stress also causes your body to lose some ability to process sugar, which could lead to diabetes.

Further, stress can be seen in your body and face. Exposures to high stress levels can make you look older and can cause weight gain.
