How To Deal With Anger To Prevent It From Getting Out Of Hand

Anger – the word carries so many images because people experience it in so many different ways. While it can be the very tool needed to bring about great or important change, it can also be a destructive avenue leading to violence or even illness if repeatedly acted on impulsively.

The biggest part of our anger problems is ourselves, and our need to justify why we have the right to feel the way we do. Forgiveness is the number one action safeguarding our minds against anger, primarily because something has happened that we do not believe is fair to us. Because it has happened to us, it in no way lives up to the expectations we have deemed reasonable for the situation. Forgiving whoever or whatever happened is one of the few things that will set our minds free and help us in mastering how to deal with anger.

Self-awareness is important mentally, as is the practice of self control. Being aware of what you are thinking and being able to take control of those thoughts that are negative will go a long way toward keeping you calm and in control. And that’s very important in learning how to deal with anger.

For the physical aspects of anger – including shallow and / or rapid breathing, the tense muscles or feelings of intense pressure, take some slow, deep breaths. The worse physical symptom is acting out or following through with one of the thoughts that is going through your head. This coupled with any rage that may be taking place in an angry person’s body almost always leads to trouble.

While it is not always easy to separate from the feelings you are experiencing, it is best to focus your attention on what is taking place physically and not the scenario taking place in your mind. This is one of the best ways we can positively dissipate the negative energy of anger. It may not work the first few times, but with patience it will be effective.

In learning how to deal with anger, try such methods as stretching (yoga if you know anything about it) as it will help you relax and restore normal breathing. Deep breathing – slowly in and out, helps clear the mind and re-enforces a calm attitude. Also, cool water on the hands and / or face can help you get rid of the hot feelings taking place inside of you.

Underneath most anger are emotions such as hurt, guilt or fear. Many people who otherwise yell or say disrespectful, hurtful things in the mist of their anger find that writing about the feelings help with anger management by lessening the intensity of them.
