Healing Addictions Through Love

Healing Addictions Through Love

He asks us to love our addictions. Love cigarettes? Love gambling? Love drugs? What’s that all about?

He tells us to love our addictions because they are among our greatest teachers, telling us through first hand experience what we no longer want to be. On the flip side, if you spend much of your energy hating and fighting your addictions, you end up becoming weaker, and in the process more likely to succumb to more of that addictive behavior or habit. This is certainly an interesting perspective, to love one’s addictions. I can certainly attest that the more energy I expended fighting an addiction, the harder I found it to be able to dig myself out of the hole.

Dyer also tells us to love ourselves. Be conscious of and thankful for every single part of your body. Be truly grateful for this wonderful gift which has been given to you – free of charge! Endeavour to love your body unconditionally. Will you still want to hurt your body? Less and less so, gradually. And when you still wish to ingest or inhale certain harmful substances, say a silent prayer of loving your body – Dyer tells us that, over time, “love will ultimately become the added weight that rebalances your life.”

“He that respects himself is safe from others; he wears a coat of mail that none can pierce.” – Henry W. Longfellow

You should not feel ashamed of yourself, as you’ve not actually done anything wrong. Shame and guilt, in fact, would weaken you further, thus making you even more susceptible to further addictive tendencies. Tell yourself that you are still a beautiful being, and that there was a Purpose why you have to go through what you are going through.

The fifth point stated by Dyer is a little more abstract and difficult to understand or explain. He asks that you create this space inside yourself, a place that is very private and that only two persons have access to – you, and God. And, in that place, post the words “I Know”. This is where you will be connected to God, where you will ask for guidance from Him, where you will request that He sends you energetic streams of purity and wellbeing, straight into your heart.

No matter how many times you fall, forgive yourself; no matter how others disparage your efforts and discourage you, keep the faith – and return to that little place within you, where you will be able to draw strength, comfort and guidance. Dyer promises that you WILL get the help that you need, to move from getting what you do not want, to getting what you DO want.
