Dealing With Teen Relationship Problems

Teen relationship problems can be quite a bit different than those found in adult relationships.

Ultimately, teenage relationship problems stem from many factors including peer pressures and immaturity. It’s important to remember that when you’re an adult trying to help a young person deal with teen relationship problems, that things make plenty of sense to you looking back, but when you’re in the midst of your teens, relationships are confusing, frightening, and sometimes maddening.

How you help someone deal with teen relationship problems can determine how they approach all of their future relationships for years to come. There are some key elements to teenage relationship problems that are very similar to those faced in adult relationships. And there are a few that are unique.

Peer pressure

Teens are constantly facing peer pressure when it comes to relationships. Girls and boys both tend to feel pressure to date. They also feel pressure within certain circles to have sex or do things they are not ready for. This puts an awful lot of stress on the relationship and can lead to animosity between the two.

Alone time

When you’re an adult, it’s easy to get some time alone for just the two of you. When you’re a kid, though, trying to date and get away from the prying eyes of mom and dad can be frustrating. Hey, they want to protect you and make sure that you don’t succumb to peer pressure, but you want them to trust you.

When a relationship doesn’t get the time it needs to develop and grow, then it won’t grow. Make sure that your teens (as long as they’re old enough) get some alone time. This can be in a den watching TV or on the porch. Don’t pry or keep an eye on them. Allowing them to have alone time in a bedroom is certainly up to the parents, but if they do, make sure the door stays open.

Hormones

Kids are changing when they are in their teens. It is during the teen years that the body goes through the most changes, especially when it comes to hormones. These hormones tend to dictate what kids do when they are dating and can contribute to teen relationship problems. Boys may tend to want to be more physical and girls want to be accepted. Girls will also tend to feel less attractive because their body isn’t fully developed yet, which may cause them to seek out acceptance through physical acts.

Trust

When you’re a teen, rumors and gossip tend to be the fuel of speculation. Earning and keeping trust as a teen is tough and it can wear on any relationship. It’s important to maintain trust with your significant other in order to have a healthy relationship.

Modern technology

Texting and emails have created socially awkward people and teens are caught in the middle of it all. The best way to build healthy relationships in teens is to encourage them to communicate in person or on the phone. Texting and messaging one another is impersonal and they won’t be able to develop the skills they need to have healthy relationships later in life.

Teen relationship problems can be tricky, but as long as you focus on what they are going through, you’ll be able to help them cope.
