Stress is a natural (and sometimes beneficial) emotion that everyone experiences at different points in his or her life. Events take place, things change, and your body reacts to these events.

Stress can happen for a number of reasons. Here are some of the biggest causes of stress in the modern life.

First, what is stress? Stress is defined as the mental, physical or emotional strain felt by a person caused by inside or outside factors. Stress can be manifested in a number of ways, from crying to nail biting to becoming more introverted. Stress is something that cannot be avoided; however, understanding stress (and its causes) can help you deal with the stressors when they do enter your life.

One of the biggest causes of stress in most people’s lives in this day and age is money. Money worries can cause more stress than any other factor in a person’s life. Individuals worry about having enough money to support themselves and their families. With the increase demands on the average paycheck, families find themselves having to cope with maintaining their current lifestyle with less resources.

We do not live in a society of free services and goods. Money is essential to survival in the modern world, so stress over money is common. Some ways to combat this stress is to learn money management skills which will help you not only meet your current needs, but put some aside for emergencies.

Another one of the biggest causes of stress is time. Many people do not know how to effectively manage their time; therefore, they often find themselves with too many projects to complete or too many personal demands on their day. At the end of the day, they feel drained from trying to get everything done and anxious over the things that were not completed.

One way to combat time stress is to learn to say no. It is okay to decline projects or invitations when you know they will cause you undue stress. Some people feel that if they turn down projects at work, it may be seen as a lack of motivation; however, there are ways to turn down projects at work and not negatively impact your work reputation. By explaining to your supervisor that you do not have sufficient time to devote to the project to make sure it exceeds company expectations, you are not only showing good work ethic, you are also taking charge of your time and reducing your stress.

Change is another big stressor, another of the biggest causes of stress. Most people do not like change and respond to it with fear and anxiety. Change is inevitable. If things did not change, life would grow stagnant and nothing would get accomplished; however, change is also a frightening prospect. By learning to look at the positive aspects of change, you will be in a much better position to deal with change with less stress.

Stress is common. By looking at the biggest causes of stress and how it affects people, you can put yourself in a much stronger position to deal with the stress. Remember, you can have stress without letting stress have you.
